Day 01 : Colombo – Adisham Bungalow – Ohiya – Eco Lodge

We set off in a van at 5:30 a.m. from Colombo and reached Hill Safari Eco Lodge by 3:00 p.m. En route, we stopped at Adisham and walked through the Thangamale Sanctuary for about 1.5 km. If we had started earlier, we could have walked to Idalgashinna Railway Station and caught the 11:15 a.m. train to Haputale. The walk was easy, through shrub jungle, with two lookout points offering stunning views. We saw a different side of Adisham.

At Hill Safari, we walked about 0.5 km as the van couldn’t manage the rocky final stretch. A tuk-tuk from Ohiya Railway Station helped transport our luggage. By 4:30 p.m., we hiked to Ohiya Mountain for panoramic views and a breathtaking sunset. The walk was gentle, through tea estates and bushy paths. We met about 20 children under 15 years and distributed Tamil storybooks, exercise books, pens, erasers, rulers, and scissors—they were thrilled!

The Hill Safari Deluxe Rooms were very comfortable and the toilets were clean. However, the standard room in the main building was cramped, with a tiny 2x2 window and poor cleanliness. The dining area near the kitchen was messy and had an odd smell. Still, it’s the only accommodation available in the area.

Day 02 : Ohiya – Udaweriya – Bambarakanda – Belihuloya

After breakfast, we began our descent to Devil’s Staircase at 7:15 a.m. The Hill Safari caretaker showed us a shortcut through the estate, saving us about an hour. The walk from Udaweriya to Bambarakanda (approx. 12–15 km) was spectacular—rolling plains, tea estates, vegetable patches, remote villages, blue skies, and distant mountains. It felt like heaven!

We reached the V-Cut and descended easily on the now-paved road, catching a glimpse of Bambarakanda Falls. Though we considered hiking to the top, we were advised against it due to slippery pine needles. Instead, we walked to the base of the falls, which was just a trickle.

Lunch was at Bambarakanda Eco Holiday Resort. The owner was knowledgeable, and her husband had been a planter. The food was good, though the toilets and general ambiance could be cleaner.

We transferred to a 4WD jeep and headed to Nagrak Bungalow, Nonpareil Estate, Belihuloya. The rocky, unpaved road had 33 tight bends, each requiring multiple maneuvers. The 22 km drive took 2 hours—best done before dusk. There’s no mobile coverage beyond the Tea Factory entrance.

Nagrak Bungalow sits atop a high mountain. The summer hut offers views of Udaweriya, Samanalawewa, Udawalawe, and more. On clear nights, the stars felt within reach—we even spotted a plane through binoculars! The garden is well-kept, the house comfortable, and the food delicious. All provisions must be brought up. It accommodates 10–12 guests. The 5:30 a.m. sunrise was SPECTACULAR—worth every moment! Siva, the caretaker, was well-versed in the area’s geography. Electricity runs from 6:00 p.m. to midnight, so charge your phones early. CDMA phones work here.

Day 03 : Belihuloya – Horton Plains – Beragala

After breakfast, we walked 4 km from the bungalow to World’s End, Horton Plains, through dense jungle.

The jeep ride down was wild—we were tossed around despite seatbelts! A must-stop is “Baker’s Bend,” where winds in June/July are so strong they’ve blown tractors off the cliff. Locals say the wind howls at night, shaking the bungalow to its core.

Children in the area are underprivileged and appreciate sweets and school supplies. The estate is building a small school, boarding facility, and crèche. Life is tough—they could use a little help from visitors.

This journey through Devil’s Staircase and Satan’s Steps felt like entering another world—perhaps like Ladakh. Remote, raw, and beautiful. A must for wanderlust souls!

After exploring Horton Plains, we transferred to our next stay.

Day 04 : Beragala

After breakfast, enjoy a full day of leisure.

Day 05 : Beragala – Kitulgala

After breakfast, we proceeded to Kitulgala—a charming town in western Sri Lanka. The Kelani River, Sri Lanka’s widest, flows through Kitulgala and was the filming location for the Oscar-winning movie The Bridge on the River Kwai. A prehistoric cave above the town was recently discovered, containing skeletal remains from an ancient civilization.

Kitulgala is also a hub for white-water rafting, which begins a few kilometers upstream.
